Importance of Mundan sanskar
The Mundan Puja is performed for both boys and girls. It is believed that the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundan, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. It is also said that the shikha, a tuft at the crown of the head, protects the memory.
Benefits of Mundan sanskar
It is a purification act performed in order to ensure that the baby is cleansed of all the undesirable elements of passing through the earlier births, a gesture to purify the soul from the previous Yonis. Another aspect is that the tonsure (mundan) triggers off the flow of intelligence and enhances the flow of knowledge in the life of the child.
Also, during childbirth, scalp develops a lot of gaps which have to be filled naturally. One way to get it done is to expose the head to Vitamin D. The best source of which is sunlight. This is also one of the reasons most religions insist on the tonsuring (mundan) of a babies head, allowing it to be exposed to sunlight.
Apart from skull development, tonsure helps in stimulating a healthy blood flow, enhances brain development, nervous systems and relief from headaches and pains caused during teething.

Most families seek advice from pandit ji, who calculates the most auspicious day for tonsuring from the kundli or considering the date and time of birth.
For the mundan ceremony, the child’s age usually varies between 1-5 years of age. The baby’s head is shaved usually in the odd months – 7th, 9th, 11th Month and/or during odd years, i.e. 1st year, 3rd year or 5th year.
This puja can be performed at home, in a temple, or on the banks of a sacred river.
